Dealing with a Sloping Ceiling

Related information:

If you're contemplating purchasing PIVOT for a room with a sloping ceiling, perhaps because the room is in the eaves of the roof, this page should help. If you find you need some additional information, please get in touch with us and supply as much information as possible to help us to help you.

Sloping Wall at the Side of the Bed

If you're contemplating installing PIVOT beside a wall which slopes inwards at the top, the section below will provide some useful information to help you ensure it's physically possible to do so.

The point of the bed which will influence this is the top/foot corner at the side of the bed – the top of the legs, if you like.

1900mm / 75" long mattress beds

When vertical, the foot/top corner of your frame will be:

  • 2015mm (79") from the floor (plus any mats)

2000mm / 79" long mattress beds

When vertical, the foot/top corner of your frame will be:

  • 2115mm (83") from the floor (plus any mats)

Find where your wall is this height from the floor (plus any mats) and then measure mattress width + 133mm into your room to find where the far edge of the base unit will be.

You'll also need to consider where your weight plates will reach when you are squatting (i.e. at the highest point for normal, racked barbell exercises). Overhead presses don't count as you can do them anywhere in your room, you don't need a rack.

Sloping Wall at the Head of the Bed

If you're contemplating installing PIVOT to a wall which slopes inwards at the top, the section below will provide some useful information to help you ensure it's physically possible to do so.

We'll assume a 270mm thick mattress, which is our maximum recommended thickness. Reducing the mattress thickness will only affect the first measurement given for each mattress length below.

How low does the slope begin on the wall?

The wall fixings mean the wall must be vertical until 600mm from the floor, plus any flooring. If your slope begins this low down then it must be a very slight slope or the foot/top of the mattress will hit the ceiling before the bed reaches vertical.

1900mm / 75" long mattress beds

When vertical, the foot/top corner of your mattress will be:

  • 110mm  (4.3") from the vertical face of the wall
  • 980mm  (38.6") from the vertical face of the wall to the pull-up bar
  • 1980mm (78") from the floor (plus any mats)
  • The frame is 35mm (1.4") higher but unless your ceiling slope is close to horizontal this will be irrelevant, as it will be the mattress edge which will be the restriction.

2000mm / 79" long mattress beds

When vertical, the foot/top corner of your mattress will be:

  • 110mm (4.3") from the vertical face of the wall
  • 980mm (38.6") from the vertical face of the wall to the pull-up bar
  • 2080mm (82") from the floor (plus any mats)
  • The frame is 35mm (1.4") higher but unless your ceiling slope is close to horizontal this will be irrelevant, as it will be the mattress edge which will be the restriction.

Sloping Wall at the Foot of the Bed

If you're contemplating installing PIVOT to a wall opposite one which slopes inwards at the top, the section below will provide some useful information to help you ensure it's physically possible to do so.

We'll help define the arc that the foot of the bed will take for each size of bed.

Your first task is to identify where the pivot point will be. You could use a tall cardboard box, the back of a chest of drawers or anything else that will allow you mark a point which is:

  • 380mm (15") from the face of the wall at the head of the bed
  • 325mm (12.8") from the floor (or any mats)

TIP: Use some sticky tape to mark a vertical line for the first measurement. Then the second measurement is simply marking a point on that line, and that's your pivot point.

Once you've marked this point, use a tape measure held at one end at exactly this point and move it in an arc from horizontal to vertical. If the free end of the tape measure doesn't hit any point on your roof, you will be able to install PIVOT.

1900mm / 75" long mattress beds

  • Set your tape measure to 1700mm (67")

2000mm / 79" long mattress beds

  • Set your tape measure to 1800mm (71")

Bed Size Recommendation

Obviously the shorter beds are better suited to this type of room, but you should also keep in mind that we can ship custom combinations of length and width. For example, we can ship parts for a 1900mm (75") long and 1500mm (59") wide bed, even though that isn't one of our standard 'named' sizes. As it happens, this is the size of a French and Spanish king size bed, as they don't match the European standard. We can even ship parts for a perfectly square 1900x1900mm mattress, though you'll almost certainly need to have a custom mattress made and probably custom fitted sheets.
